The Oneida Indian Nation is one of the strongest pillars of our local economy. The Nation employs nearly 5,000 local residents, generates millions of dollars of investment in local businesses, and has made significant contributions to our community.

  • The Oneida Indian Nation is the largest employer in Oneida and Madison Counties, and the third largest employer in all of Central New York.
  • 96% of Nation employees are NOT members of the Oneida Nation.
  • 95% of Nation employees live in Oneida, Madison, and Onondaga Counties.
  • Since the opening of Turning Stone Resort Casino in 1993, the Nation has created jobs at a rate that far outpaces overall job growth in Central New York AND New York State as a whole.
  • The Nation has supported more than 5,000 local construction jobs since 1992.
  • The Oneida Indian Nation has been a major economic engine in Central New York since the 1990s. Last year, spending by the Nation and its employees generated a direct economic impact of more than a half billion dollars.
  • The Nation spends as much as $170 million annually on goods and services provided by non-Nation businesses in New York State.
  • According to U.S. Department of Commerce estimates, annual spending by the Nation’s employees supports 1,000 jobs at other businesses in New York State, generating upwards of $86 million of output every year in Oneida and Madison Counties alone.
  • According to the U.S. Department of the Interior (click here), the annual state and local government revenue that the Nation generates – due to its agreements and the taxes its employees pay – far exceeds the annual costs to state and local government of providing services to the Nation. In 2005, state and local governments made a combined net profit of nearly $17 million.
  • Over the past decade, the Nation has invested more than $9 million in local infrastructure projects, including: the Verona water line expansion and water tower; feasibility studies on behalf of the town of Verona; City of Oneida sewer improvements; and a new Oneida County water system.
  • As a tribute to the historic bond between the Oneida Nation and American colonists, who fought side by side in the Revolutionary War, the Nation created the Silver Covenant Grant Program, which has distributed more than $17 million to school districts and municipalities in Oneida and Madison Counties since 1996.
  • The Nation is a regular donor to a wide variety of local charities and causes, including but not limited to: Tri-Valley YMCA in Oneida; Children’s Museum of History, Science, & Technology in Utica; Alzheimer’s Association of Central New York; Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse; Herkimer County Community College; Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York; NAACP of Oneida County; Oneida Firemen’s Benevolent Association; Rome Area Chamber of Commerce; Special Olympics Onondaga County; Vietnam Veterans of Central New York.
